A BUSA' AFTERNOON YESTERDAY

WORKS COAIAIITTEE’S VISIT OF INSPECTION.

Under its new system of operations during the absence from Gisborne or the Mayor (Air J. R. Kirk) the Borough Council is entering very wholeheartedly. into the work of the Borough, and the AYorks Committee at a meeting yesterday carried out a number of routine duties in an expeditious manner. There were present at the meeting Crs. Collins. Hill, Smith and Wade.

The Committee made a -visit of inspection to municipal works carried out during the past week, the first locality visited being Lytton Road, where i* was found that the roadway had beer formed and almost metalled from Childers Road to Gladstone Road. A complaint from a resident in respect to a culvert put in across the road, and which he contended, was too small, was inquired info, and it was decided to communicate with the Countv Council stating that the wooden curvert was rotten and offering to put ir a new one to the satisfaction of the County Council, provided that body would pay half cost, the culvert ir question being used for one of the County’s outlet drains. As a temporary measure a 12-inch pipe has been put in in the meantime.

AA ellington Street was next visited, and the Committee gave instuet-ions that the road should be reconstructed and metalled to the best advantage with the money available. In regard to Herbert Road it was decided that the portion from Aberdeen Road to Palmerston Road should be metalled. In Berry Street it was decided to construct 6ft foot paths, one on each side of the street, and in Root and AA illiam Streets it was decided to construct one footway only. The Committee gave instructions that Disraeli Street should be metalled from Aberdeen Road to Palmerston Road.

The Engineer was instructed to hare tar-painted the portion of Palmerston Road between Roebuck Road and Cobden Street, wkieh was recently made with water-bound macadam. It was decided that-it be an instruction to the Engineer that when footpaths are being constructed they should be graded as set out bv the permanent levels.

The Finance Committee was also to have met yesterday to consider some important matters, but as it was impossible to find a quorum the meeting was adjourned until ArVednesday. The AVorks Committee intends to visit the waterworks this afternoon.
