AUSTRALIAN BARMEN.
NEW DEMANDS FILED
[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT] SYDNEY, Dec. 29.
The Federated barmen and barmaids of New South Wales. Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia have filed a claim with the Arbitration Court, demanding an increase of wages aifd shorter hours. The present minimum wages are:—Barmen £2 ss, barmaids £l. They now demand a minimum of £3, with equal pay for men and women for equal work, and a fortyeight hours’ week, in straight shifts of not more than nine hours daily, as against the present sixty and seventy hours weekly in broken shifts. It is anticipated 'that in the event of the demands being granted there will be a considerable increase in the price of liquor.
