GALA DAY AT MOTU.

SUCCESSFUL SPORTS GATHERING.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPOIfOENT] MOTU, Dec. 26. Motu was en fete to-day, when the annual sports were held in Caulton s paddoc k. Visiters attended from near and far, many even coming from the metropolis—Gisborne. The attendance was the largest which has 1 been seen at a gathering here. Che snorts were well managed by a capable committee. and the many interestmg competitions provided the big crowd with excellent entertainment. The results were as follows: —■ Maiden Race. —R. Members’ Race.—N. Hansen 1, C. Ruby 2. Stepping th e Chain.—A. Butler 1. Sheep-guessing Competition.—Miss M. Jennings, W. McDonald, and G. Hayes (dead heat). Much interest was taken in the weight-guessing competition, the fat sheep used being donated by Mr. O. Richmond. At the close of the competition the animal was put up for auction, the proceeds being donated to the Gisborne Hospital. The : spirit of giving was in tho air, and many of tlie purchasers put the sheep up again. So spirited, was the bidding that £7 10s was raised, which, with the subsidy, will mean that the Hospital will benefit to the extant of £ls.
