GIFTS IN THE WHITE HOUSE
Among the gifts in the White House to former United States Presidents is a valuable desk which was presented to President Hayes by Queen Victoria. It isi made from the timbers of the British ship Resohite, which was
part of the expedition that was sen*: in- search of Sir John Franklin, the Arctic explorer, who w'as lost in 1858. The Resolute was discovered and extricated in 1858 by an American ship. The vessel was purchased, fitted out, and sent to England as a gift to Queen Victoria by the President and the people of the United States. Years afterwards, when the ship was broken up, the Queen ordered desk made from the timbers, ancl tendered th<? desk to President Hayes. The State Department custodian is also keeping guard a gold medal pending the time when former President Taft can receive it. The medal was presented to him by th'6 Italian tiovernment for his zeal ini sending help to the earthquake sufferers in 1909.
