THE NATIONAL RESERVE

MOVEMENT AT TOKOMARU. By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent TOKOMARU BAY, July '23. We have recently had a visit from Mr Shorratt in the interests of the National Reserve and, owing to his advocacy, influential committees or both ladies and gentlemen have been formed to further the movement. The pushing on of the National Reserve ' should tend: to strengthen the same support to the rifle clubs that this now force is going to secure. It is very necessary for the National Reserve to know how to drill, but it is more necessary for them to know how to shoot and whilst Mr Sherratt’s efforts in promoting the establishment or the Reserve are appreciated to the fullest, it is to be hoped that those offering will take the earliest opportunity of improving their marksmanship. This can only be done through regular practice amt no more convenient means' can be found than by the National Reserves affiliating with the various rifle clubs. It is a wellknown fact that in almost every rifle club there are a. number of members who can only bo termed ‘'honorary members’’ and it is on the cards and also to be hoped that the formation of National Reserves in the various centres will tend to enliven the interests of the members of the various clubs in their various clubs. This matter affects our local club and we arc indebted to Mr Shorratt for his visit, as present indications show that a livelier interest will be shown in home defence matters and in every man being able to handle a rifle in particular. A meeting of the newly formed National Reserve is called for Friday night the 28th, when further names will be taken and the movement furthered as far as can be arranged.
