MARRIED SOLDIERS ' DEPENDENTS.
COSTING £750,000 A WEEK. (Received .July 28. 8.5 n.m.) LONDON, July 28 In the House of Lords, Lord Newton said payments to the dependents of married soldiers cost £750,000 weekly. The War Office did not desire to recruit- married men, but the* fact that Parliament was treating the dependents of marrkxi men with greater generosity served as a special inducement to them. At the camp inquiry witnesses stated that there was no evidence of the adulteration of liquor at neighboring hotels. There had been less drinking and the men's conduct aad improved since leave was stopped. GAMBLING AMONG OFFICERS. AN INTERESTING COURTMARTIAL. (Received Julv 28. 3.10 p.m. LONDON, July 28 Before a court-martial, Lieut.-Col-onel Charles Prior, commanding the transport depot at Deptford, was charged with unmilitary conduct _in inviting inferior officers to a gambling house in the A\ est End. All the- officers lost at cltemin do for to an unknown American. One officer gave evidence that ho refused to pay, suspecting card-sharp-ing. and stated that Lieut.-Colonel Prior informed hint that ho received 025 for taking his colleagues to the place.. " . Lieut.-Colonel Prior don:ode the allegation. and expressed regret at forgetting the regulations in regard to gambling. The ease was continued in camera.
