“TWO-UP.”
A LITTLE GAME AT MAKAR AKA. JUNE OF To IMI.’OSED, Frank "Weston was charged at the Magistrate’s ’Court yesterday morning with, playing “two-up” in a, public place at Ma.karaka nn July 2. Mr Coleman appeared for defendant, who is at nresent n( Auckland, and entered a plea of guilty. Senior-Scrgt. Hutton, who represented. the police, explained that at the time of the last races a number of men left their horses at Makaraka. Constable Sleath was pa-ssirig and saw 1.5 men playing “two up.” When his presence, was observed a warning was given, and the men scattered. The constable chased and caught defendant, who admitted having played the game. Mr/ Coleman said defendant had hitherto borne a good character. He was not a resident of Gisborne, but was on a visit at the time. They were not gambling on the occasion in question, hut were tossing for drinks. Sonior-Sergt Hutton: There wi\s money on the ground. Mr Coleman pointed out that defendant had been quite open in his admission to Constable Sleath. Counsel submitted that in the ei mi instances it was a ease in which _ his Worship might see lit to deal leniently. It "was not a “two-up” school. In reply to his Worship SemorSorgt. Hutton said the game was played a good deal in the district. If is Worship said apparently defendant had not given the police any trouble in the matter. The maximum fine was £SO, hut lie would fine defendant Go and costs £1 Is fid.
