PERSONAL NOTES.

Mr W. D. S. MacDonald. M. P. arrived from Wellington on Saturday morning. Mr James MacKenzie. Under-Secre-tary for Lands who, in the ordinary course would have retired from the service on Saturday, will remain in office until the end of September. P.A. MR J. D. Holmes, assistant engineer for the Public Works Department, who has been for some time past in charge of the railway construction work at Ngatapa, has been promoted to the position of resident engineer at Tauranga, and leaves shortly to take up his new duties. Mr E. O. Willis, Government meat inspector at Gisborne, has been transferred to Wellington, and left for South by last night's steamer. Mr Willis succeeded Captain C. K. Spragg as inspector at the abattoirs and Messrs Nelson Bros.' freezing works, when the latter left for the front some eight months ago. Mr Willis has proved himself a capable and obliging officer, and his departure will be regretted .

It is reported in Gisborne that Captain Bishop will proceed to the Front as Adjutant to the Trentham Regiment (Lord Liverpool’s Own), now in training. Captain Bishop is well known in Gisborne, having been Area-Sergeant-Major here some two years ago, before being promoted to the commissioned ranks.

A P.A. message from Wellington says; — On the occasion of his retirement from the position of Chief Engineer of the Maintenance Branch of the New Zealand Railways, Mr James Burnett was, on Saturday, presented with several handsome recognitions of his past services and of the esteem, in which he is held. The presentation was made by the Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister for Railways, at the head office buildings, in the presence of a full assemblage of the staff.
