The High Commissioner's market report, dated London, July 31, states : Moat. —The market is weaker, with a tendency downwards, partly owing to increased supplies available for the general public, together with the very moderate demand for all descriptions of mutton. Canterbury is at 7-Jd per, 11) for light weight, hoar- weight o;,'d ; North Island, ' 7d for best quality, ewes 6 ; 'jcl. Lamb: Canterbury two’s, Bgd, heavy weight 84 d: other than Canterbury, 85d for best quality light weight. Beef: There is only a small quantitiy of New Zealand beef on the market, and it is sellnm: Hindquarters 9.Vel, forequarters Gild; chilled hindquarters 8.1 d, forequarters 6RI. Butter.—The market is quiet but firm. Danish, firm but euiot, per cwt.lo4s to 1665, and up to 168 s; Siberian, good demand, finest 128 s to 1325, exceptional 131 s; Irish ' creamery, firm, lIBs to 150 s. exceptional 152 s Australian, 138 s to 142 s ; Argentine, unsalted, firm 146 s to 148 s. Cheese.—The market is quiet, with a tendency iii favor of buyers. Canadian lias a little bettor tone, white and colored per cwt, 74s to 765; English clieddar, market quiet, white and colored, 74s to 765, exceptional 78s; United States, market dull, 66s to 745, according to quality and size. Hemp: Tho market is steady, but me demand is only moderate. New Zealand good to fair grade, per toil, £3l IPs; fair, £29 10s; Manila, New Zealand, August to Oc Sober shipment, fair £36; medium, £32. The output from Manila for the week was 17,600 bales. Hops: The market is firm. English, per cwt, 1.05 s to 130 s; Californian, 90s to 105 s. Wheat.— ’llie market is quiet. Prices are slightly weaker. August to September shipment,-'Canadian, per quarter, 545; American, 475. Oats.—-The market is quiet, but steady. August to September shipment, Argentine, per quarter, 255.
LONDON MARKETS. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received August 2, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON August 1. Wheat.— Quiet and unchanged. There are better crop reports from North America. At Chicago. July options are quoted at from 108.5 cents to 111;) cents, September 103’ cents to 106 cents. The wheat and Hour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,090,000 quarters, and for the Continent 895,000 quartets, Atlantic shipments absorb 296,000 quarters. The total for Europe is 610,000 quarters, including India 148,000 quarters. Danish butter is quoted at 164 s to 168 s. Cotton.— A ugust-Septeni her shipment 5.23 - per lb. Jute.—August .shipments £23 5s per ton. N.Z. Hemp.—liily-Septembcr shipment £3l 5s per ton. Rubber. Hard fine Para 2s SRI per lb; plantation, 2s SRI: smoked, 2s sd. Copra.— iSeptombor-October shipment £22 2s 6d. SMSTHFIELD MEAT MARKETS. United Press Association—Copyright. (Received August. 2, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 1. The Incorporated Society of Meat importers’ Nmithiield market quotations for the undermentioned classes of frozen meat are based on actual sales of not less than one hundred carcases of mutton or lamb or twentylive quarters of beef of fair average quality. The quotations are not for selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of the shipments now on the market. The prices which follow are on the average a farthing per lb more than the values ex ship, this difference representing an average cost in expenses, handling, conveyance and selling the meat.
