The local brancii of the P.unket Society went a step further with their crusade in the interests of the health :of children last night, when they again approached the Borough Council i on the subject. I Afr« J. L. Reeve, hon. secretary of i the Phmket Society, wrote: “I am instructed by the committee ’of tho Plunket Society to express their thanks for the careful consideration that the Borough Council has given to their representations regarding the' milk supply of the town. The committee of the Plunket Society venture to suggest that the Council should seek f r, r powers like Wellington in order to enable them to take greater control over the milk. They teg to point out- that- although samples of milk j taken by tlie inspectors may vie-kl the proper constituents of milk upon examination that the great difficulty in hot climates is in the delivery of the milk. By the time it reaches customers" houses, it is full or dust, and. as no provision is made for keeping it cool during delivery, it ;-s .on tlm point of turning sour. These conditions alone make milk unfit for ;•• rants. In the report that His | W--ip lias issued on the matter i he suggested that a private indivi- : dual i; 'v be* willing to open a depot i on ili- lines sur-.'ff: :l b-v the Plunj ket > • Thu -tci tv venture i to ]>ciut mu that it would be very I difficult *or the R-;rough Council to • lv sure that ■ u a perron -bought ! only froin approved dairies, and also I that uuirr.ing and uiglit supplies of J milk wore never mixed. They are | of amnion that the only satisfactory i method cf managing su b a depot I would be for the Council to have ! entire control. The P uck. t Society i would £'g the Borough Council to : <-onsK:er the nn«-s:;j';ity of obtn.m----j ing powers for this .purpose, «.on- ! sidering tlie very important hearing the matter has on Lie health of children." The Mayor explained that nothing could be done until legislation was introduced giving Council's power m the direction desired. It was decided to inform the Plunket Society, to this effect and to point out that" it was too late to introduce legislation this session.
