ITALIAN ADVANCE.
AUSTII lANS FORTIFYING VIENNA. ALPINI SURPRISE THE ENESVJY. SEVERAL AUSTRIAN POSITIONS TAKEN. LONDON, Aug. 2. The “Echo de Paris” Rome correspondent states that owing to Italian successses the Austrians have resinned the fortifications at Vienna, which were stopped when the Russians left Galicia. _ The Alpini, overcoming extraordinary difficulties, surprised several Austrian positions, north of Condina and along the Ponale Valley, preparatory to an attack on Riva. AUSTRIAN COLLAPSE THREATENEDIMPORTANT ITALIAN OPERATIONS. THE POSITION EXPLAINED. (Received Aug. 3, 10 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 3. Tlio “Daily Chronicle’s” Rome correspondent saj’s the fall of either the Tarvis fortifications or those at Toigino, Gorizia, will result in the whole Austrian defence •from Carnia to the Adriatic collapsing. If Gorizia falls the Austrians must wheel to the eastwards with their right wing under cover of the Tarvis forts and make stands on the Id via River to save the river, and if Tarvis falls they must retreat to Drove in order to block the Vienna road, while the Austrians operating in the middle of the lower Isonzo will be in danger of being surrounded. The .Lombard Alpini, who conquered the spurs of Alt. Spieoolo, have turned the enemy neck and crop from'the vast outworks of Enrogetvp. The Austrian left wing is at Nalborghetto. The Italians feinted a forward movement at Lushnitz. and the Austrians immediately sent reinforcements to Russnitz. The Italian big guns opened a furious bombardment, ploughing up the trenches at Eorcella and Dbiana!ot, while long-range artillery prevented the reinforcements returning. The Alpini then seized the 4()OOtt high Alt. Grenada and. .with a fierce frontal attack, captured Forcella and I Dieianalot and cook 107 prisoners and bayoneted the rest. An official message says : —Our seaplanes raided Riva with excellent results. Our artillery bombarded Rove rote station. Wo captured Alt Modetta in Carnia after a protracted battle, and it is now firmly held. There was a violent Austrian onslaught On Monte Sirusi. Our fire shattered the attackers and then drove them back in great disorder. Crack Austrian regiments were engaged, including a regiment of the Emperor’s Jaegers. The whole of them were almost annihilated. Alilan reports that Italian artillery rapidly advanced and successfully commenced an attack on the second Austrian line from Rubbia- to Pietrarossa. The extraordinary daily capture ot officers are due to "the demoralisation of the men, who. panic-stricken and terrified at the artillery, abandon the officers, enabling the Italian infantry to make forward dashes and effect captures. The Italian advance is forming a wedge between Gorizia and Toloino, and is causing concern, as it renders the railway useless to the Austrians. RECRUITING IN AUSTRALIA. HAS THE VOLUNTARY SYSTEM FAILED ? SYDNEY, Aug. 3Speaking at a recruiting meeting. Senator Grant- said the time had come when we should realise the voluutai.v system had almost broken down. Australia. ought to realise she could not muddle through. Alt- ’Wade, referring to the Stadium incident, said the advertisement was bad. It was a stain on Australia s name which she must remove at the earliest possible moment. A citizens’ meeting at Port Darwin passed a resolution in favor of the regulation oi food prices _ in the Northern territory, and carried a motion asserting that the Northern territory offered a better scope than any other part of Australia for nationalisation of the means of production, distribution, and exchange.
