BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. There wore present.: The Mayor (Mr \Y. G. Sherratt) and Crs. A. Wade, G. Wildish, G. C. Muims. H. Miller, T. G. Lawless, 11. E.. Bright, J’. Clive Collins. Mr Henry Hoare, secretary of the Gisborne Gas Company, wrote, notifying the Council that owing to a subsidence of ground in the roadway near the Post Office in Gladstone Road through the laying of the stonn-wator drain causing an alteration of level of the Board’s (3-inch main and thereby almost stopping the simMy of gas to KniLi, it would be necessary to relay this As they had gou over the dilficulty temporarily, the" did not wish to open tho road during the , wet weather, but gave notice that as soon as the weather cleared this work would,be done, and they intended to ask the Council to appoint an officer to inspect the damage when the ground was opened. 'Dunn, one of the Council’s employees at the powerhouse, wrote as follows:—-‘‘I herewith tender my resignation on account of continual alterations being made in the powerhouse, which are a deliberate contradiction to the agreement signed by tho station engineers, and only read to dissatisfaction hero.”

The resignation was accepted, and it was decided to call for applications for the positions. Miss 0. J. Cortroy, agent, applied for a common drain on behalf of AV. IT. Tucker, .being an extension on to 205 Bright Street, The application was refused.

The Auckland manager of the British Bituminous Bound Road Syndicate, Ltd., wrote, statin" that they had received instructions from London cancelling all quotations for Bituminous to date. Prices would be cabled shortly. From what he could glean the prices should have a downward tendency. Writing further, under date July 21. he advised that cable quotations from his London office gave the price of moxpnalte. c.i.f. Napier, at £ll nor ton, plus bank charges, and he took it that the charges to Gisborne would he about the same. Tho letter was received.
