THE AUCKLANiTtoTJ R XAM ENT. GISBOR ME MEN UNSUCCESSFUL. Tlie Auckland provincial amateur boxing tournament was brought to a close at the Town Hall on 'Tuesday. Among the audience were a number of wounded soldiers from the Dardanelles, who accepted the northern sneia-tion's invitation to he preseufc. The new champions are as follow-: Bantam.—-TT. Gilchrist, E'lerslie. Feather. — M. Dowsing, Anekland. Light.. 31. James, Oneluinga. Welter. —J. Koliand, Taumaranui. sfield.—P. Gloss. Auckland. Heavy.—J. McHugh Auckland. Two events of special interest to Gisborne were the light-v edgin' and heavy-weight contests, which are described rs follows: LIGHT-W EIGHTS. Holder: M. James. , A Dennett (Gisborne), 9si, l()lb, v. Y. P. Craig (Auckland), 9s,t 101 b. Dennett laid the advantage in height, and reach. - The first round was very quiet. Both boxers wore cautious. Dennett- was more •iggres 1 - sive in the second ..round and scored on several occasions with a straightleft to the jaw and a right swing to the side of the head. Craig did some good work close in. The last round saw Dennett leading all the way and he had all the best- of a hot exchange just before the final gong .sounded Dennett was awarded the bout.

Air J aiues (Onelmiiga) 9st Tib boxed a live with 1). Wylie. Final.—-Dennett burst his thumb in his bout with Craig and was unable to contest, the final with James, who thus retained the title.

THE HEAVYWEIGHTS

AicMUGH AGAIN CHAMPION

J. McHugh’ (Auckland) 12.10 and X. Lewis (Gisborne) 12.3 were the heavies. The pair boxed openly, there being very little clinching, and, though Lewis went down twice, it was only through slipping,' for he was up at once, the round, however, being McHugh’s. The second round also saw McHugh doing the better work. Ale Hugh had all the best of the final round and was again champion.
