SPECIAL STEELS.
There is an exceptionally large demand in England for the so-called '•'special steels,” that is to sav, stoc > v,hit'll are specially hardened, and which are much used in connection with armament work, partioulai iy toi making machine tools. These ‘‘special steels" are made by the addition ot various comparatively rare metals, such as tungsten, manganese, vanadium, and molybdenum, to steel, ant their importance may be gatlie,et from the fact that in Germany all stocks of metals are being commandeered by the Government. In tlie United Kingdom molybdenum is-at present in so gront request ore is limy selling at 1'54-O .per ton. The Imperial Institute has given considerable attention for many years past to the materials from winch these metals are prepared. During y>ld more than half of the work! s molybdenum came from Australia, P] in< f pallv from Queensland and Now bourn Wales, but it occurs also among othet places ill South and Western Australia, New Zealand, Canada, .South Africa, and India. The Imperial Institute communicated some time with the various producing countries in the Empire with inference to the present special opportunities of disposing of molybdenum, with a view to increasing the British output and encouraging prospectors m likely districts not yet worked.
