HOSPITAL BOARD VACANCY.
(To the Editor > ■Sir.—The action of the Envoi gh Council in passing a nioti ei to do what they had already reim/eu they ' would do, in .such civoun .‘antics .gr have arisen, orient the Hospital Board vacancy is to be commended, and it is to he hoped they will not now pass a further motion to rescind their resolution to stand by their own recorded judgment of the host course to pursue! Did the Council not inform the authorities at Wellington that in their considered opinion the law might well he altered to permit of the election of a candidate in the position of Mrs Walker. 'Tis truly a pity—and pity it is true—that two of the members of the body now electing its representative on another public body are Humselves members of the latter body. 'Phis rather unfortunate position doubtless arises from the dearth of men of ability in Gisborne as candidates for our local bodies. Perhaps this fact leads the public to think that Mrs Walker, if chosen to represent) the Borough Council and if she is still willing to act, would he rather carrying out a duty than having an honor conferred on her by the Borough Council. The Hospital Board deals with the Hospital staff—nearly all women—and the patients are mostly women and children. A woman might well help the Board, one would think, in many matters that come before it. just because she is a woman. Can it he that Mi’s Grundy influences the votes without having a seat on our Borough Council?—T am, etc., . ELECTOIE Gisborne, August 9.
