DOMINION’S WAR OFFER.
THE TAYO NEAY BATTALIONS
NO REPLY RECEIVED YET
By Telegraph—Special Correspondent W ELLINGTON. August 10. The Defence Minister has not vet received any notification from the Imperial authorities of the acceptance of the two new infantry battalions recently offered by New 'Zealand. Concerning tho offer of New Zealand units, it is interesting to know what mixed feelings General Godlev regarded the raising of the Trentha.m Regiment. In a letter to the Defence Minister, under date June 24, General Godley wrote: I do very much hope that the large reinforcements necessary to keep up our New Zealand Infantry Brigade will not suffer by the raising of these two new battalions. It would be a terrible, pity if the material for the First Brigade deteriorated at all, as they have made such a name for themselves, and are acknowledged on all sides to bo so excellent. Mr Allen said, referring to this letter, that tho same point was stressed in nearly evorv letter he received—the necessity for keeping up reinforcements. “I have telegraphed to General Godley,” said Mr Allen, “to relieve his mind and to assure him that if we send ne_i# battalions we shall also keep up reinforcements, not only on the main body, but on the new “battalions. I hopo people will take this to heart—how important it is to look ahead for a year or even two years, and to make certain that- we can keep up these two-monthly reinforcements.”
