THE WIDENED KIEL CANAL.
'Ranking ns ope of the greatest engineer iug feats in the world, the, Kiel Canal, now ono of the most frequently mentioned spots in the universe, is not kown to the public at large, save in a broad general way. The reason nnj the wonderful work of the Gorman engineer at Kiel was not made more widely known was, it is 1 claimed, due mainly to strategic reasons. Last June; when the Kaiser formally opened the new locks of the Kiel, built in connection with the deepening, widening, and general improvement or tins artificial waterway, little was said about the enterprise. r .!he exhaustive scltemo of changes and additions (states an American paper) cost no less than £12,000,000 or £4,000,000 .more than the original waterway post* hen oo some idea may bo obtaincd of tho magnitude of the task accomplished—by far. the greatest engineering feat-so far carried out in Europe. Th'o width of the canal at the bottom iias -been increased from 72 to 144 feet, its depth from 2d'to no less than 40 feet, and its width at the water-level from 220 to 334 'feet, while its new locks are the greatest of all concrete structures. Then, along its hanks, numerous sidings havo been bum, where shipping may ho at anchor, while tho high-level railway bridged and roads that crossed tho channel have been pulled down and replaced bv more modern and bigger structures ot steol.
