WELLINGTON, Aug.. 16. A special mtet'ng of the W ellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held this afternoon for the purpose of considering the question oi making provision for the arrival of sic-k and wounded soldiers returning from the Front. The chairman (Air. 11. Baldwin) said that several conferences had been held with the authorities on the subject during the past week. On Saturday a small su’o-cominittee representing the Beard waited on the Minister for Public Health and made certain suggestions. They suggested that the necessary provision might- be made by putting another storey on Ward No. 4, Wellington Hospital, and making an addition (estimated at a cost of £3400).. An alternative proposal. which was favored by the doctors. was the erection of a. -building for 40 beds on the kitchen garden block on the left-hand side as one entered the hospital grounds. This building could be erected for £3OO. and a nurses' home and other requisite buildings for a further £3-500. Without providing for upkeep and administration. the Minister said he was prepared to advance the sum required if the Board would go on with the work. The Government required 100 beds from now to the end of the war. It was pointed out that at present the Board had a verbal arrangement to provide for from 50 to 60 beds. Rather than do what the Minister suggested, the Board was prepared to meet him by suggesting that a hospital be built upon the hill level with Yict-oria Yard to provide for 40 beds. The chairman urged that the Board’s proposal was much preferable to the Minister's, on the ground <>l less cost, nearness to hospital conveniences, less staff, etc. The Board then proceeded' to discuss the matter. Dr. Barclay (medical superintendent) suggested that the Minister might give the Board a grant- of £6500 and let the Board make the necessary provisions with it. Later the Board met the Minister and Colonel Yalintiue in conference.

THE HEW BATTALI OHS. RIFLE BRIGADE TO BE FORMED--'Press Association Teles™ ru WELLINGTON, Aug. 16. AYith tlie Trentham Regiment and the two battalions- which _ have just hee.n accepted by the Imperial Government, it. has been decided to form a Rifle Brigade to he called the Trentham Rifle Brigade (The Earl of Liverpool’s Own). The Trentham Regiment will form the Ist and 2nd Battalions and the two new battalions (just accepted) the 3rd and 4th Battalions, when the two battalions join their comrades. New Zealand will thus have two full infantry brigades at the front, the Ist Brigade being.composed of the Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago Battalions,j and the 2nd Brigade, as already outlined, fhe distinction between a Rifle Brigade and an ordinary Infantry Brigade is in reality very little. Members of the Rifle Brigade wear black buttons instead of-.-brass and, on ceremonial occasions, carry their arms at-the trail instead of at the slope. New Zealand, in her Territorial force, has only one Rifle Regiment—the 11th Regiment (Taranaki Rifles).
