Women police constables are to be given a trial, in Sydney, so very shortly (writes “Woomcra” in _ the “Australasian”) ive should see items such as the following in the police news: — “Tho prisoner, a powerful fellow, named Hercules Muggins, resisted violently, but Constable Jane Charmer womanftilly stuck to him. With one tug the prisoner nulled down the constable’s hair. Constable Charmer bill shed, but, soon recovering her selfpossession, she extracted two hatpins from her- helmet, 'and tho prisoner veiled with pain and fury. Holding Muggins firmly, on the hat-pins witn ono hand, the constable proceeded to do up licr'hair ivith tlie other hand, calling upon t-ivo ivomen in the crowd, in the King’s name, to assist her. This they did by lending her a hand-mirrow and some hairpins. Havin'7- adjusted her helmet to the correct angle, ivitli the help of the mirroiv, the constablo vigorou.sk shook Mug-o-ins,' ivho all this time had been strugHng wildly, am) then with a deft movement of her neatly-gloved hand, knocked him down. Having placed an exceedingly small foot on the ruffian s chest, Constablo Charmer proceeded to search for the handcuffs m her but was unable to liuc them. She had forgotten them or •lost them—she did not know winch. Always cool and resourceful, Loustable Charmer ordered six men, m the King’s name, to go and find the handcuffs.
