UNSATISU ACTO P, Y ]IEI >L V ItKFEBPiEJ) BACK.
A lett'T was received at last evening’s uit-<-tiu<r of flic Borough Council from Mr ft. M. Porter, secretary of the C'onk Hospital and Charitable Am Hoard, who wrote stating that he had l>een directed by the Hoard to reply to the Council that, while at present it was not possible to alter the estimated expenditure for the current year, every' endeavor would be made to reduce the actual outlay, and it was confidently expected that it would he possible to avoid collecting the final instalment in full. Cr .Miller asked when there bad been a meeting of the Hospital Board to give the secretary instructions? He would like to ask Cr Bright, as a member of the Hospital Board, when tliis meeting had been held. Cr Wildish: You had better ask Cr Collins. Ho is the senior member oi the Hospital Board. Or Collins: Pardon me, I am not. Cr Bright is the senior member or the Board. Cr Miller: As we cannot get a ply--Cr Collins: Pardon me: don'say that you cannot get a reply. There may have been a mooting oi the Board which 1 have not attended. li you will give me permission, 1 will ring Mr Porter up, and find out who gave him the instnv.tions in the matter. Permission was given Cr C-ollins to ring up the secretary of the Hospital Board and he ascertained tnat the Council’s letter had never been before the- Board, and that ho had received Iris instructions from the. Chairman. Cr Miller moved that the letter he leforred back to the Hospital Boaid. He said the Council did not want a reply from the chairman of the Board ; it wanted a reply from the Board. Or Wildish seconded the motion. Ilfstated that the Council had been treated most discourteously. The reply which had been sent was no reply at all. " , Cis Lawless and Ah um s' supported the motion. Cr Collins said it was a pity that the letter had not- come before the Hospital Board. They would probably find that there wore extenuating circumstances for the action the emmman of the Hospital Board had taken. Cr Lawless pointed out that the Council had asked the Hospital Board for a detailed statement as to how this enormous amount of expendituie had been incurred. The reply which had been sent was a bald statement which was of no value to them. Or Collins said it was apparent that two letters had been sent to the B< Cr < Miller said that the only defence which had been put up was byr Or Hredit, who said that prohably-ihe Board had framed- their estimates and could not alter tliem. He would ike to point out that the Council had framed its estimates before the Loaul had framed theirs, and thev liad done SO oil the distinct understanding that the.re would bo no levy for capital charges by the Board during the year ■CV Miller's motion that the lotto be referred back to the Hospital hoard was then put, and earned, Crs Altlkn Wildish, Manns, Hill and Law.oss voting for it. .
