BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY AIEETINC. 'file ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. There were present: Grs. Jas. Brown (Acting-Mayor), H. AlilleiqG. Wildish, T. G. Lawless, H. E. Bright. G. C. Mums, H. E. Hill, and J.'C. Collins. COR R ESP 0 NDENCE. The Borough solicitors, Messrs*. Chrisp and Coleman, forwarded transfer of right-of-wav to- Air. Thomas Fraser’s, Cobden Street, which they stated was in order. They stated that they had endorsed the consent of the transfer.—ft was decided to confirm the transfer. Air. A. H. Coles, Sub-Telegraph Engineer, wrote, asking the Council to ‘ have trees growing on or near the j kerb.line in Fox Street, Clifford Street (near Rostrevor Hospital), and Hirini and Harris Streets (between Wainui and Riit-ene .Roads) cut to clear the Depa'rtment’s new wires for metallic circuit to a'height of 12 to 14 inches from pathway level.—Cr. Minins asked if there was no way of saving those trees, which had taken years- to grow. It seemed: a pity to destrov them.— The Acting-Mayor said he was not in sympathy with those who wished t-o retain trees alongside their roads. They had only to look at Harris Street to see how damp trees kept- a road.—i On the motion of Cr. Bright, it was decided to comply with the request of the Telegraph Department. Mr. R. E". Forrest and 34 other residents forwarded! a petition asking that lights be erected on the electric light poles in Awapuni Road. They pointed out that at present there was not « single light in the whole length of this road, which, made it very dangerous at night.—On the motion of Cr. Wildish, the Electrical Engineer was instructed to place lights in this street in their turn.---Alr. J. R. Palmer, Town Clerk of the Wellington City Council, wrote, stating that the Council’s proposed remit to the Municipal Association’s Conference with regard to suhdivison of land for sale had been considered by the Wellington City Council. He had been directed by his Council to inform the Gisborne Council that in its opinion the difficulties could he overcome by making by-laws under section 31 (ee) of the Municipal Corporations Amendment Act, 1910. These by-laws can fix minimum frontages and areas of ‘sections On which dwelling-houses may be built-. The Gisborne Council also had power to regulate the course of new streets needed for subdivision purposes, tind'er section 116 of the Public- Works Act, 1908, and its amendments. He also referred the Council to section 13 (A) of the Public Works Amendment Act-, 1911.—Cr. Manns said that it seemed a strange, thing that they had had the power in their hand® all along.-—Cr. Miller said, that all tho Councils thev had written to were as much in the dahk'as they were, as they had- all promised! to support the: remit.—The Town Clerk said the matter would come up at the next Municipal Corporations Conference.— Cr. Lawless moved that the letter from the Town Clerk of Wellington be referred to the Works Committee to go into- on Tuesday night next, with instructions to report on tho matter to next meeting of the Council.—Cr. Wildish seconded the ’motion, which was carried.
The Railway Department notified that th ft endorsement of surrender of a portion (la Ir 2p) of the Council’s lease No. 6450 at Gisborne had' been completed-, and the original deed was returned therewith. New deeds of lease of the surrendered portion were in hand, and would! bci fonvardedl for execution in due course.
Mr. O. Dunn was reappointed as shift engineer at the pofyor-house. Til o r Pown Clerk of the.•lnvercargill Borough wrote asking tho Council’s support of -the/ following resolution, which had' been forwarded to the Government with a request that the ]aiv should ho altered in tho direction indicated):—“That' the Government, be asked to /amend the Tramways Amendment Act, clause 6, as to make it impossible for a member of the local body interested: ini an appeal case! to act as a member of the Appeal Board; also to enaebthat n<v-employee of a tramway service be eligible for a seat on an Ap]>eal Board, which would place/ him iu tiro position of sitting in judgment upon his employers.”—lt was decided to support the resolution.
Accounts amounting to £13,0.30 under general account and £562 2s 5d under loan accofTnt were passed for payment. ■■
