STEADY PROGRESS IN
GISBORNE.
Builders arid contractors report steady business locally, though ttiere is a slight easing eft in the amount of building under way as compared with the position three months ago. There is little doing at the present juncture in regard to alterations to business premises, and contracts lor private dwellings have been few during the holidays, but in spite of that quite a healthy tone is registered in the building trade and a number ot dwellings are going up in the subGood progress is reported by the contractor, Mr. Geo. Smith, in regard to the new Catholic School in the course of erection in Childers road. It is expected that the building will be completed by the end of the present month and will be fit for occupation by the time the school resumes for the year. The large block of business premises on the corner of Gladstone road and Derby Street in the course of erection for Messrs Clare and Nesbitt is also well under way towards completion. The contractor, Mr. G. S. Smith reports that the building should be available for the incoming tenants by February 28. ~ Otlier large jobs for winch contracts have been let are, the Poverty Bay Power Board’s new offices and show rooms in Peel Street, alterations to the Power Board’s premises in Carnarvon Street, and the Tata* pouri htotel. „ ... F The Power Board’s offices will, ot course, constitute the' biggest job, and a start was made by the contractor, Mr. A. Kirk, early this week on preparing the gnound for the foundations.
