BLAZE IN HASTINGS

A fire broke out early this morning in wooden buildings on Government railway property in Russell Street, leased as business places. The outbreak originated in a fruit shop kept by Mr Zakarus, the" ' premises and stock being completely destroyed, and the flames spread from the upper storey to Webber’s chemist’s storeroom upstairs on one side,. and to Burcham’s photography premises, also upstairs, on the ether. Webber's upstairs stock was practically destroyed by fire and stock underneath was also considerably affected. Btircliam’s premises and contents were burnt out, and Mendel’s fancy store, a motor service, and the Economic grocery on the corner of Heretaunga street suffered considerably from water. The properties wee leased bv Messrs W ebber, of Hastings, Robjolins, of Napier, and Rodgers, of Hastings. The insurances available are: Webber’s stock and fittings, in the Atlas office, £SOO. Commercial and General £SOO, Standard £2OO, South British £2OO, National £l5O, Government £1000: Mendel's stock, in the Eagle, Star and British Dominion £700; bus office, no insurance; stock little damaged; Economic grocery, stock and fittings in the South British £7OO. Roger’s and Robjolins’ buildings were insured for £ISOO in the Eagle, Star and British Dominions. All the valuable legal books and documents in Dolan and Rogers’ offices were undamaged.—P.A. .
