THE JOCKEY’S FEE. SIXTEENPENCE FOR RIDING THIRD. (Special to the Times.) AUCKLAND, Jan. G. Reference in the “Star” to fees received by jockeys at the recent Ellerslio Carnival reminds Mr. Tom Corlett of Tellawa who rode at a North Island meeting half a century. ago of a fee of 1/4 paid by the grateful owner whose horse he steered into third place. This was at a Te Awamutu gathering in 1874. Mr Corlett had the mount on Costello, a big bay horse belonging to Mr. Andrew Kay of Arakau. * The race was a swcep"stake of 2/6 post entries,’run over a mile course, and there were 19 entries. The winner received £2 and the second horse. 7/6. Costello gamed his owner no prize money, but putting his hand into his pocket Mr. Kay produced all his change one shilling and four pennies and handed it to the “Jock?’ “I was iust as pleased as if it had been a £SO note,” says Mr Corlett.
