In a cage at the back of his father's house at Tonics street, New Brighton, Master Manfred Kennedy feeds a yellow and black tortoise with lettuce leaves and-thistles and dandelions for about six months in every year. £fter that he does not need to ‘bother with it because it buries itself in the ground and sleeps till the warm weather comes again.' The tortoise is fourteen years old and was brought from sunny India to Manfred when he was a-baby, by his uncle. 'When it came to New Zealand first, it was allowed to run round the back yard for some years. On one or two occasions, however, it was lost and a cage was made for it.
