Eight hundred masterpieoes of Flemish painting gathered at Burlington House are insured for £3,000,000. Their auction value is at least £10,000,000. This constitutes the most remarkable art Collection of the present generation. Famous Continental and American collectors loaned treasures necessitating a special band of watchmen in the galleries night and day. Sixty Rubens and Vandycks in elude Rubens’ “Descent from the Cross’ 5 from the Antwerp Cathedral. A series of Flemish tapestries lent by the Australian Government alone are worth a quarter of a million. Vandycks are nobly represented by Hubert Vandyck’s “Three Maries at the Sepulchre’ 5 and Jan Vandyck's “Portrait of My Wife 5 ’ from Bruges,. which was discovered in a Belgian fishmarket where it was used as a tray by a fishwife. It is now valued at £50,000. Roger Van Der Weyden, Hans Memline, the sculptor Constantine Meuiner, Gerard, David John _Mabuse, and others are all splendidly represented. —A. and N.Z.C.A.
