PRODUCE REPORT

LITTLE BUSINESS REPORTED

Apart from the usual food stuff sales there is little to report in regard to the grain, seed and produce market. ( • Business has not yet opened up after the holidays, and there is little outside inquiry for Poverty Bay products.

Maize still retains its value and one* sale has been reported since the New Year at 6s 9d f.o.b.s.i.

Seed business is dead. Owing to the rain harvesting operations are held up all over the country.

WEEKLY STOCK SALE.

PRICES MUCH IMPROVED

Bidding was very keen at the weekly stock sale at Matawliero yards yesterday, and prices, in consequence, showed, an improvement on late rates, except in the case of soin fat shep lines. STORE SHEEP.

The total entry of store sheep was 3000. Bidding was particularly good on the large pens, and prices realised showed a substantial improvement. After lunch the smaller pens were sold, and though they also brought improved prices, the increase was less than that of the larger lines, the bidding not being so keen. The top price of the- sale was £1 0s 7d for a pen of 251 well-grown wethers, while 2-th wethers sold to 19s and IBs 9d. After lunch, too, 4-tli wethers sold up to 19s 7d and 2-ths to 18s 4d. There was a good entry of lambs, selling from 10s Id to 15s 8d and 9s for a pen of fifty small lambs. Forward ewes with good mouths sold to 12s 9d and forward ewes with failing mouths sold to 9s 9d. A pen of 162 5 and 6-yr guaranteed ewes from Mr. A. H. Wallis, carly-hsom and big framed sheep, made 16s Bd. Lightconditioned 2-ths sold at 13s Bd, and a pen of light-conditioned old ewes at 6s 6d-

FAT SHEEP The fat sheep pens were filled, the yarding numbering 1874 head. The 'sale was disappointing. Many pens of prime sheep sold Between 43s and 14s, and a pen of 42 ewes brought 14s Gel. FAT CATTLE There was an entry" of seven 'fat cows and one vealer. A pen of three good cows made £4 15s, others selling to £3 15s. Bidding was fairiy good. Prices were; 1 cow £4 10s; 1 do., £4; 3 cows £4 15s; 2 do., £3 15s; 1 vealer (p) 10s. STORE CATTLE. A few store cattle sold well. Thirty forward cows sold at £3 17s and a pen of 'Hereford-cross heifers made £2 17s. A line of cows and calves sold at £5 2s. PIGS. In the pig section a few weaners and porkers were yarded, and the following prices realised:, One light porker £1 10s 6d; 3 do., £1 9s 6d 1 do. £1 12s; 3 weaners £1 2s 6d; 4 do., £1 ss; 5 du., £1 Is 6d; 2 do. (P), £1 3s.

LOCAL MEAT MARKET Killing was resumed at the local works this week after the Christmas and New Year holidays with a full board of butchers in every case. Owing to tho continued wet weather and the lack of strength in the grass, the number of sheep offering, especially lambs, is tending to ease though stock arc still coming forward freely. The recent advance in Smithfield values influenced the local market and buyers during the week announced a rise in ewe and wether mutton. No change has yet taken place in regard to iamb's. • Quotations yesterday afternoon were as follows: LAMB Up to 361 b., 7-)cl; 371 b to 421 b, 7d; over 421 b, 6)-cl; seconds 6^d. WETHERS Up to 561 b, 4|d; 571 b to 641 b, 4|d; 651 b to 721 b, 3f;d; over 721 b 3jcl; seconds 4’,d. EAVES Up to 561 b 3§d; 571 bto 641 b., 2|d; over 641 b, 2fd. HOGGETS Up to 561 r<, sd; seconds, 4 til. Tlie same values hold good at Wairoa except in the case of lamb which is i/cl lower. Tokomaru Bay rates are -}d less all round.

AT STORTFORD LODGE

ADVANCED PRICES ALL ROUND

A SMALL YARDING

At Stortford Lodge on Wednesday there was a small entry of fat cattle which sold well at advanced rates, fat cows especially being well competed for, while all cattle, bullocks particularly, lacked finish. As a consequence most of the bullocks were .passed in. Store steers sold well though the quality on the whole was not good. In a small entry of fat sheep, Poukawn Station offered some good quality ewes and wethers which aroused keen competition and sold at an advance of 2/- to 3/- over lath rates. Store sheep were in very keen demand .and the small entry xvas readily sold at prices showing a 2/advance over the last sale in .....

LONDON DAIRY PRODUCE MARKET. Messrs Dalget.y and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their head office, dated January 6 : Butter.—Market is very slow.
