LEVEL CROSSING SMASH

FORTUNATE ESCAPE.

WAIMATE, Jan. 7. The driver of a half-ton truck, F. Tew, employed by the South Canterbury Power Board, had a miraculous escape from injury in a level crossing accident at High Street. Tew was approaching the crossing when he heard the train whistle and put his brakes on. Then, finding lie could not stop in time, lie accelerated, and almost got over but the buffer of the engine, which was now slowing down, just caught the rear of the truck, wliici, rolled over on to the roadside. Tew was uninjured, and little damage was done to the truck. —P.A.

DOMESTIC FOUND DROWNED. NELSON, Jan. 7. Muriel Burns, daughter of Mr. C. Burns, of Nelson, aged sixteen, employed as a domestic at Takaka, yvas found drowned in the Takaka river. Deceased left a note saying good-bye to friends.

BODY FOUND IN SCRUB

INVERCARGILL, Jan. 7

An inquest was held at Winton on William John Walsh, 47, a faun hand, whose body was found in the scrub at Springliills. Deceased had been missing since November 14. There were no signs of violence on the body. A verdict was i (turned that jdeatli was due to < xposure.— P.A.

SUDDEN DEATH AT TINIROTO

§ Information was received over the telephone, yesterday by the constable stationed at Patutabi that a man had suddenly dropped dead at 1 p.m. four miles beyond Tinivoto. Unfortunately the telephone line was in had order and the constable could not obtain any details as to the mishap or as to the identity of deceased.

Inquiry at tlmHocal police station revealed no further information and it was stated that nothing more would he known until the Patutabi constable had returned from a trip to the scene of the fatality.
