NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY A. W. DAVIES. AUCKLAND, Jan. 7. The New Zealand chess champion-, ship concluded to-day, A. W. 0. Davies (Auckland), winner of the title in 1904-5 and again in 1908, being the victor. Erskine, of Melbourne, was runner-up, and Moir and Dunlop tied for third position. Erskine had to win all his three adjourned games in order to secure the championship. Instead of that he drew two and won one by deiault. Results of the, last round are as follows: —

Gyles v. Davies. On resumption, of play Gyles regained his piece and a rush to queen a pawn followed, in which Gyles was one move too late. Dunlop v. ltoberts.—Dunlop was unable to make any impression on ltoberts in the end position, and a draw was agreed to. Rolling v. Pleasants. —Pleasants allowed Kelling to win the exchange when pressed lor time. Pleasants fought a stubborn uphill fight, but eventually had to resign at move 41. Moir v. Erskine.—With a bishop of the opposite color, Moir had to be content with a draw. Earlier, iu the end game Moir had chances, but was pressed lor time, and decided not to take the risk, being unable to clearly see his way. The adjourned games from the previous rounds resulted: — Severne v. Erskine. —For the final adjournment in this game Severne had a pawn up in very tight position. Erskine by good combination of rook and knight played into position where he threatened a perpetual check, to avoid which Severne would have had to risk a general break up of the position. As Severne was unwilling to do this a draw was preposed and agreed upon. Bullock v. Erskine.- —Bullock had a splendid attacking position at the adjournment, but failed to put in an appearance in time to resume, and lost by default. The final position of’the players is as follows— Wins. Losses.
