LESS IN RECENT YEARS
CHRISTCHURCH, -Jan. D. Mr E. Snow, secretary of the I'hristchnrch Tramway Employees Union, wrote to the Minister tor immigration last month, urging the necessity for the_ prohibition or restriction of immigration of Asiatics and enclosing a motion by the union settim' out that “their mode ot living and standard of living are an absolute menace to the welfare 01 tlm white population.” . The Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister for Customs, replied that, in I92'J, legislation was passed that gave the Government ample power to impose effective restriction on the number or aliens or race aliens, including Asiatics, entering New Zealand for permauent residence. As far as the Minister was aware, no other council had a more effective means of controlling such immigration. . To show the effect of the legislation that came into force on April 1, 1921. the Minister supplied the following particulars of the mimlier ot Indians and Chinese admitted to New Zealand:— .. „ .
