league team defeats CUM-

BERLAND

O VER WHE LMING SUPER TOPiIT V IN FIRST HALF.

(Received Jan. 9, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. S

The New Zealand League team defeated Cumberland by 18 points to 3. The match was played at Workington in cold wet weather before 366’0 spect:> tors.

Cumberland in the first half played with a strong wind, but were only dangerous with forward rushes. The New Zealanders first mastered these forward movements and then assumed superiority. It mattered little if they were beaten in serums; they passed the ball on every opportunity. Their quickness of attack bewildered Cumberland, who were penalised during a hot attack, Gardiner kicking a goal.

Soon after Hall, with a fine burst of speed, scored a try which Gardiner converted

Excellent passing resulted in Davidson getting tbe next try and Gardiner again converted.

Gardiner himself scored the next try, which he failed to improve. The visitors in the second half were less conspicuous, though tbev had the advantage of the wind. They seemed to lack condition. Desmond scored their onlv try in this spell, and Thornburton scored Cumberland’s try. The New Zealand team was: Kirwan, Brown, Davidson, Cole, Desmond, Brisbane, Hall, Menzies, Thomas " Herring. Gardiner, Mason and Aver v.—A .N. Z .C. A.
