CHARLTON COMES BACK

DEFEATS JAPANESE CHAMPION IN WORLD’S RECORD TIME.

(United Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received Jan. 9, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 8. The State swimming championships were -decided in fine dull weather before a record attendance. Following are the results :

100yds. championship.—Henry 1, Kirkland 2, Doyle o. Won on the touch. Time, 56 3-ssccs. 880yds. championship.—Charlton 1. Takaishi 2, Kelly 3. Botli Charlton and Takaishi got a poor start, bur speedily passed the other three competitors. The Japanese touched first at the 110 yards slightly ahead of Charlton, and at 220 yards was a foot ahead. At 330 yards he was again first to touch, and the race continued neck and neck till 440 yards, when Charlton drew away and, swimming strongly, won by 66 yards in lOiniu. 32sec., a world’s record, lowering the iormer world's record by 5 2-ssee. — U.P.A.

Record breaking swims by two girls Misses Doris Magee-and Sybil Brown were porionnod at the sports here vesterdav.

Miss Magee lowered Miss karquhar’s 100 yards intermediate record of 69 L-ssecs. to 69secs. Miss Brown won the girls’ 50 yards handicap in 31 3-osecs., which is an improvement of four-filths oi a second on Miss I, Courts’ Dominion record ol 32 2-ssec. The records, however, cannot be oiii c-iallv recognised, as they were not established under record-breaking, conditions.- —P.A.
