The business community o: Gisborne and numerous lrieuds received a severe shock yesterday on nearing of the death of Mr George staUej Stockdale, of the firm uf T ,'. G-Zjw end Co., jewellers. Mr mevkaaie nad been in ill-health some months . but appeared to have compiet*-i% recovered. Yorkshire, in IS-Sl, and was apprenticed t-o the watch-making ana D lery trade. About fifteen years ago he decided to come to New /.eo.a-.ct and landed at Auckland. After sonic mouths he took up a position Walker and Hall’s. Some seven years ago he came to Gisborne, entering into the firm of AY. Gone ana Co., where he remained until mg death. , ▼ Mr Stockdale was a very popumbusiness man of this town, his unn-.n- , ing good nature ertde;\*mg him to a:i classes. He was a keen musician, and was a valuable meinoer ci the Gisborne Orpheus Society, ana liolv Trinity Church choir. He mso took a keen interest in Cook Hospital and various benevolent and on numerous liberally in raising funds for cornier: = for tiie inmates. Mr. Stockdale was an enthusiastic I reemason, being a member of Lodge Turanganui. landia Royal Arch Chapter, and hose Croix.
