BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETNG

The first meeting of the year of the Gisborne Borough Council was held last evening. Present: Ihe May or (Mr G-. Wildish) and Crs. J. Blair, L. T. Burnard, D. W. Coleman, C. E. Bickford, T. E. [oneycliffe, H. E. Maude, and H. H. DeCosta. n . The freezing manager of the Gisborne Shoepi aimers Ltd., wrote seeking permission to drive small lines of sheep across bridge between fjie hours of 5.30 and l p.m. He- promised that the permission if granted would only be availed of occasionally to relieve congestion at the Stanley road siding.— The Mayor' said there _ had _ been trouble over the (jiiestion in the past. He was sure it was not in the interests of the public to have sheep going over the bridge at all hours. He moved that permission be refused. —The motion was carried. Dr. Mercer, District Health Officer, wrote calling attention to the state of the Borough morgue. He stated that the old building was incapable of satisfactory repair and lie considered the time had come tor th Council to consider the erection of a new building in a more suitable place.—The matter was held over to he considered in next year’s estimates. Mr C. E. Armstrong wrote forwarding a statement of accounts.fai the work of improving the river bank in the. vicinity of the Soldiers Memorial. Not counting two accounts to come to hand, the work cost £276.—The statement was received and a motion was passed expressing appreciation of the work done by Mr Armstrong in the beautifying" of that portion of tbe borough- ' „ „ ~ The Gisborne Gas Company advised that it bad no intention of opening up the mains in which the Council intended to lay the hot mix paving.—Received.
