MONTHLY COUNCIL 'MEETING
The monthly meeting of the Waikohu County .Council was held yester day. Present': Crs '! . u. j pence (chairman),. H. H. Dods, A. A. Fraser, V. L. Harding and J. Kara. Mr F. A. Hansen applied for a renewal of the license for his billiard sakon at Motu.—Granted.
The town clerk, Greyinouth, on behalf of the Dobson mine disaster relief fund, wrote asking for donations for the permanent relief of the sufferers.—lt was decided to leave a subscription list, open at the Council office.
The chief surveyor. Lands Department, Gisborne, wrote asking for the Council’s consent to the closing of a blind road in the Huiarua block.— Agreed to. The Commissioner of Crown Lands advised that- it would be necessary to got statutory authority to lift the reservation over pt. section 6, block IX., Ngatapa, hut the Council could grant a lease up to 21 years, under the Reserves and Domains Act. —It was resolved to olfer a lease for a period not exceeding 21 years. The resident engineer, Public Works Department, advised that the Minister had approved the transfer of £SOO, £1 for £l, from the Moanin' grant, and £450, £1 for £l, from the Mctu-Whakarau road to Motu valley road; authority for the expenditure of £499, £1 for £l, was also enclosed.—Received. The Public Trustee advised that he could not entertain any applications for loan money at less than G per cent, interest. —The clerk was authorised to arrange for raising the loan at G per cent. The secretary of the Department of Labor advised that a special meeting should be called to decide upon the statutory closing day for shops for the current year. —Received. The clerk of the Cook County Council wrote stating that he hoped to be in a position to distribute the heavy traffic fees for 1925-20 at an early date.—Received. The resident engineer, Public Works Department, wrote asking that applications lor payment of subsidy be made quarterly.—Received. Accounts amounting to £2600 T3s 3d were passed for payment. It was decided to appoint the Public Trustee as sinking lend f-anuniss--1 inner for Kanakanain No. G loan. The clerk was instructed to call applications for the position of poundkeeper at Matawai. It w.as resolved to impose the 10 per cent, penalty on unpaid rates on February 15. The clerk was instructed to investigate the Council’s power to d4po.se of unused portions of road reserves. ENG INKER 'S REPORT.
An indication of the work cairied cut on the \\ aikohu County roads during the month of December was given in the following report submitted I V the Engineer Mr A. G. Lucas to the monthly meeting ui the Council held yesterday: Motu Elding.—The contractor for ' the reforming on the Motu Valley road is being held up owing to the continued wet weather. Tno contractor for metalling 1-14 chains of the Motu Valley road na.s pitched camp and made a start. The Limber and ironwork for the Motu \ alley bridge ha\e been ordered and as soon as these come to hand a contract will be let for their erection, ( tner than this ordinary maintenance only has been carried out. Wailluka I’uhng.—'Jwmg to the continual wet weather ears were unable to traverse the unmetalled p< rtion of the Alain Highway, 3be two surfacemen and horses were kept on this portion during tin- holidays, but owing to weather conditions v.< re not able to use the drags, on the roads until after the new year. 'J he contiaet lor the metalling if 32 chains at Otoku has been held up by the weather. A start has been made with the Mahnki metalling, but very little progress has keen made. M ith the completion of the Mahaki m tailing other methods of maintenance will have to be put in force .fjom Waikohu to Otoko. The contract for the l'oututu deviation is proceeding, and the erection cf til? small bridge s' ould be started shortly. Ordinary maintenance has been carried out. Waipaon Hiding.—The muiarun load is still giving trouble. .Some metalling has been clone at To Rata where the road was very boggy, and maintenance has been carried out as usual. Kanakanain.—Tin* grader gang lias been engaged on the Kanakanain road grading watertables and shoulders, and patching has been clone where necessary. Maintenance has been carried out as usual.
Mangatu. Ngatapa, and Karnka ridings.—Maintenance only has been carried out.
