DOMINION TOURNAMENT
MORNING PLAY IN SINGLES
AUCKLAND, Jan. 11. For the bowling tournament the weather was again beautiful and the greens were playing well. When play' was resumed this morning in the Dominion singles all the twolifers were pitted at Carlton, as 6S one-lifers were engaged for two rounds at other greens. Howard 16; Lawrenson 24 v. O’Hagen 9. RESULTS OF DAY’S PLAY KEEN EXCITING CONTESTS AUCKLAND; Jan. 11. Beautiful weather again prevailed for the continuation of the New Zealand bowling singles championships. The following jvere left in at tho end of the day:— No losses: Mclntyre (Hamilton). One loss: Bell jnr. (Hamilton); Walker (Auckland); Smellie (GreenIsland): Clarke (Rocky Nook); Maher (West End)'. It will he noted that Smellie is the only player from outside the Auckland province still left in. Australia’s last hope of success faded with the defeat of Allatt (Victoria) by Maher and Bell jnr. Keen interest was taken* in the ninth round'when Mclntyre and Maher the only two lifers, were pitted against each other. Mclntyre played brilliantly, winning by 19 to 12, Walker, had a close game with J. Hutchison (Dunedin), Walker holding the lead until the fifteenth head when the score was 12 all. With one head to go the score was sixteen all, and in an exciting finish Walker won 17 to 16. An even-pegging contest was provided by Gray (Kelburn) and Knight (St. Heliers). Knight led o—o on the third head, Jut his opponent then crept up ,and led 10— 9 at the twelfth head, 10 all at the thirteenth head and 13 all at the eighteenth head. Gray was ono_ up with one head to go, but .. Knight scored two to win 15—14. Bell junior and Duff had another even game, Bell winning 15—14. i P.A,
