HASTINGS, Jan. 12

Last night a large brick building in Russell Street, owned by John Blake, of Hastings, and occupied by A. E. Bullen and Co., auctioneers, was burnt out to a shell. The brick wall prevented the fire connecting with Joe To’s grocery shop next door. Bullen went into the incubating room to trim the lamps and, the match burning his lingers, be threw it away. When the coeoanut matting started to burn lie tried to put out the flames with a sack. He upset an incubator lamp, which set fire- to flax and coeoanut matting, and other inflammable material, spreading swiftly. Bullen made Ids escape. Contents valued at about £SOO were destroyed, besides goods awaiting sale and owned by clients. The upper floor, occupied by the National Service club as a social hall, also was destroyed with the furniture and fittings, which were valued at about £2OO. Bullen’s insurance was £3OO in the General Assurance Corporation on the stock and £250 in the same office on the incubators and accessories. The Australian Alliance had a risk of £ISOO on the building. The National Service Club’s loss is covered in the Royal Exchange office.— I’.A.
