WHAT MOTIVE?
FATHER DBSSENRS HIS SON. JOAN SMITH’S DEATH. BROKEN HILL, Jan. 1. Mr. Hughes, father of the youth James Hughes, who has been charged with having murdered Joan Smith, to-day told the special representative of The Sun that his son had stated to the police that he'put Joan on a pony hut she fell off. He carried her to the woolshed, but on discovering that she was dead he became frightened and buried her. ‘‘My boy is a very decent lad said Mr. Hughes, “and I do not see any reason why his story should ha disbelieved. ~ . “What motive coulo there nave been for any crime? None whatever.”
