annual picnic.The annual picnic of Messrs. Common, Shelton and Co.’s staff, held on Thursday at the Patutahi Domain, proved a most enjoyable outing for the employees of the firm and their friends. There were a number of children present, and entertainment for the little ones was provided on a lavish scale, every child receiving a gift of some sort,- while the pro gramme of competitions arranged tor the adults excited keen contests and much merriment. One of the features of the outing was the annual meeting of cricket sides representing respectively the stores anti the combined office and soft-goods staffs. The match was for the liiaeh Cun, held during the past year by the store side, and the latter were able to letain the trophy, winning the game by a margin of 37 runs. Five teams representing the different 1 departments'of the business competed in the tug-of-war competition, the office team, comprising Gardiner, Jones. Hansen, Rowley, Bell and Bennett, proving the winners. The stock department team won the relay race, the team consisting of Mrs. Jones and Messrs. Jones, Corkery and Hurrev. The drapery department team, Miss Lister and Messrs. Truman, Venables and Payne, finished second. The sports programme results were:— Ladies’ nail driving competition: Mrs. Hogan 1. Miss McFedries 2. Golf putting: Mrs. Adams 1,. Mrs. Pirie 2. Cigarette race: Mrs. Scholium and Hansen 1. Dual race: Miss Gault and Truman 1. ICO yards staff championship race, for cup presented by Mr. T. M. Mc.Geehan: T. Corkery 1,.F. McDonald 2. Whistling race :Miss Witty and Somervillo 1. Three-legged race: Miss McDonald and Nicol 1. 10-3 yards men’s handicap: AV. Gavin 1, J. Scholium 2. 50 yards ladies’ staff championship: Miss Lister 1, Miss McWhirter 2. Old buffers’ race: Coleman 1, Dell Potato race; Truman 1, Somerville 2. , Thread-the-needle race: . Miss Elmers 1, Miss Stem 2. _ Wheelbarrow race: Miss Ellmers and Witty 1. _ . n Sack race : Hogan 1, Quinn 2. At the-. conclusion of the programme tin* prizes were presented by Mr. C. G. Bloore, a member of the directorate, who congratulated the staff on the excellent spirit shown and complimented the organisers, Messrs. McDonald, Bennett, Truman and Jackson, on the-success of .thenarrangements. ■
