PRODUCE REPORT MAIZE AT 7/-. - Increased activities have been registered in the local grain, seed and produce market during the week and there is a better inquiry for maize. Auckland merchants are on the market offering 7s f.0.b.5.i., subject to cheap freights, Gisborne. One or two small parcels have been contracted for by Hawke’s Bay merchants at that figure during the week but there is little maize offering just now, sellers holding for higher values. A Prize crops in the district are looking remarkably well but require sun if ‘ the maize is to ripe^.* Harvesting operations are now in fv.il swing, farmers taking advantage of the few days’ weather. The new season’s chaff will not be available till the. end of February. Barley crops are looking well and some good yields are expected. FAT STOCK PRICES
Local quotations for fat stock on tlie hooks have remained firm during tbo week though the Home market is dull with a tendency to lower values.
There has been a distinct decline in killing returns at all the local works during the last wee k or so and figures show a drop of at least 30 per cent, on the December weekly returns. The prolonged spell of wet weather is responsible especially in regard to the . lambs. Prices are not out yet for beef but inquiries are increasing and it is expected quotations will be available next week. LONDON FROZEN MEAT MARKET. Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London office, dated January 13: — Quotations. —N.Z. prime crossbred lamb, 'Canterbury, heavy 71 d, light 10’d; North Island, heavy nil, light nil; demand for N.Z. lamb limited. Last season’s N.Z. meat stocks are practically cleared. Pork.—Prices are unchanged.
MATAWHKRO STOCK SALE GOOD DEMAND THROUGHOUT A good attendance of the public and an entry of good class stock resulted in a satisfactory sale at the Matnwhero yards yesterday. The demand generally ’.vas good and ] ric-cs were in the main, well up to late rates. STORE SHEER The total entry of store sheep was 3500 and the quality generally was good. The demand was good throughout with prices similar to those of last sale. Top price was £1 2s < d for a pen of 222 4-th wethers, a fine line of fat and forward early-shorn sheep. This price was closely approached by that ol a pen of 25 2-th ewes which realised £1 2z 6d. These were extra good 2-tlis, with the appearance of 4-th. Other 2-th ewes sold up to £1 Os Hkl for a pen vf 94 and £1 Os lid for a pen ol 43.-hour-tooth ewes realised up to £1 2s id. and 2-th wethers up to IDs Gd and IDs 4d. Forward ewes mate 'up to 14s and 13s 5(1.
