FIRES.
TWO CALLS IN WELLINGTON. TWO-STOREY BUILDINGS IN DANGER. WELLINGTON, Jan. 17. At 4.45 p.m. on Saturdaj 7 the fire brigade received a call to 74 Dixon Street to a two-storied brick and iron building containing offices and store rooms. It is understood the fire broke out in the ground fioor. The first floor, which was severely damaged by fire and water, was occupied bj r Byes and Chemicals, Ltd. The ground floor" of 76 Dixon street, occupied by the Toledo Scales Co. was damaged by smoke, while the contents of the top. floor, occupied by Excelsior Supply Co., Ltd., were damaged by fire and water. No insurances are available. At 7.15 p.m. the brigade was'called to 72 Vivian street to a two-stor-ied five-roomed wood and iron dwelling and shojfc. The building, which was unoccupied, was owned by ,F. Goodwin. The woodwork in the kitchen was damaged by water and cutting.—P.A. • SIX-ROOMEtThO USE BURNED. HAMILTON, Jan. 17. A six-roomed residence owned and occupied by P. Feeney, solicitor, ot Xgaruawah'in, was completely destroyed by lire last evening.—P.A. MILKING MACHINES DAMAGED. WELLINGTON, Jan. 17. Three milking machines and a quantity of timber were slightly damaged by a fire which broke out at the Fletcher Construction Co.’s mill, Cable street, at 10.45 o’clock lastnight. A passer-by saw flames and the brigade arrived in time to prevent a serious blaze. The place where the fire originated was full of shavings. The premises were insured in the New Zealand office for £9OOO. and the plant and stock for £1325 and £IOOO respectively.—P.A.
EMPTY WAREHOUSE GUTTED. . MELBOURNE, Jan. 17. Fire gutted an empty warehouse in the city* belonging to Cocks and Co., The damage amounts to many thousands. A number of adjacent premises were badly damaged by water. — U.P.A. TWO OUTBREAKS AT OHAKUNE. OHAKUNE, Jan. 17. Two fires occurred in Ohakuue on Sunday morning. A dwelling occupied by R. Ridgw.ay won totally destroyed. The insurances are £6OO on the house, and £3OO on the furniture, and £IOO on the wireless nlant, the policies being held bv the Home Insurance Co. L. Fetze, a farmer, suffered the total loss of a shed, farm implements and hay stacks. These were insured for £6OO in the Guai-dian office P.A.
EMPTY SHOP ABLAZE
WAIMATE, Jan. 17. Fire broke out in an old empty wooden shop just before one o’clock on Sundav morning, but the brigade being called promptly little damage was done. The building was insured approximately for £IOO. —P.A.
