WORLD-WIDE HAPPENINGS. The South Australian Government Statistician reports that the South Australian drink bill lor 1914-15 to 1920-21 had nearly doubled, due to the substantial increase in prices, while during the same period the quantity consumed per head of the population and the convictions for drunkenness per thousand of the population bad decreased considerably. From 1920-21 to 1925-28 the consumption per bead had increased only slightly, but there had been a steady increase in convictions. For the vear ended June, 1926, the drink bill 'was £5 7s lid per inhabitant, compared with £5 5s 2d the previous year and £2 19s 2d in 1914-15. __ The London paper, the _ M eekly Despatch, says that following the tests ol trans-Atlantic telephony, the scheme will shortly be extended to a number of provincial cities, including ’Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Leeds.
