The- medical evidence showed -the child had been suffocated, probably by a bundle of cloth jambecl tightly iii front of the neck.—P.A. SEQUEL TO WOMAN’S DEATH. TAXI MAN CHARGED WITH RECKLESS DRIVING. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 18. As the sequel to the death of Ivy Louisa Boon, 31, married, who was killed in a collision on January 9, James Lacier man Matthews, 35, a taxi driver, was charged with having driven recklessly and with causing the death of Mrs. Boon, Who was in a milk van driven by her husband. One witness said the taxi was going over 40 miles an hour.

Accused pleaded not guilty, ana wias committed for trial, bail of £2OO and one surety of £2OO being allowed.—P.A. SUDDEN DEATH ON BOWLING GREEN. - ROTORUA, Jan. 18. Whilst howling this afternoon, Charles Overton Smith, draper, . of Rotorua, and well-known in Taranaki and Auckland, aged 67 years, fell and expired before aid arrived. A car driven by Stanley Rickard, a chemist, of Wellington, containing his wife,' two brothers, Airs Sutherland, a sister-in-law, and a little o-irl skidded and overturned near Bulls this morning. The party was returning from a tour of the North Island. Airs Rickard was seriously injured and was admitted to the Wanganui Hospital. The others escaped with slight injuries.—P.A. CASE FALLS ON SHIP’S OFFICER DUNEDIN, Jan. 18. Alfred Shepherd, aged 21 years, an officer on board the Trevorian, was admitted to hospital to-day suffering from a. compound fracture of the left ] e <r and a simple fracture or the ri°ht leg sustained through a case fallino- on him from a sling in the ship’s hold. At the inquest into the death of a Maori, Tekatu Kauwliata, 21, ' ™ho died from injuries to his head through falling loft from a willow trie near Ngaruawahia, the coroner returned a verdict of accidental death.—P.
