BOLSHEVIK CONTROL OF CANTONESE A COUP THAT TAILED. LEADER 1 EXECUTED AND MUNITIONS DISCOVERED. (United Press Assn.—Copyright.) SHANGHAI, Jan. 17. The “White Russian" paper Russia publishes an interesting story relative to the widespread activities ot Cantonese propagandists under Bolshevik control. Recently General Yangchow, the well-known Cantonese administrator of the Chinese Eastern Railway, was seized by orders ot Changtsolin on charges of holding Bolshevik leanings and was summarily executed. A search, of deceased’s premises revealed a thousand Soviet rifles, adequate ammunition, pistols, and handgrenades, in preparation for a coup d’etat, also correspondence with Chiangkiashek, Borodin, and other Southern Red leaders.

Thu story goes that the coup was planned for January 15, "but the summary removal of the chief mover brought the plot to nought. Changtsolin is unlikely to handle the revolutionaries in any gentle manner in view of the continual elforts of the Russian Bolsheviks to deprive him of Chinese interest in the most important railway in China. The whole story is indicative of the far-reaching schemes of the Cantonese Bolshevik advisers, and the lengths to which they are prepared to go.

TOKIO, Jan. 17. “While sympathising with the legitimate aspirations of the Chinese. Japan is ready to defend’her legal interests in every way,” declared the Premier, Mr Wakatsuki, at a meeting of Kenseikai leaders. “Because it is consistent with the policy ot friendliness towards the welfare of our 400,000,000 neighbors, Japan is now recognised by both China and the Powers as holding a position where she is able to reconcile the American and European policies towards China with the Chinese desires. Japan is ready to assume this duty.” Barton Tanaka, leader of the main Opposition, addressing the Seiyukai, agreed that Japan was the responsible leader in the Orient, but had been neglectful of her plain duty to face the situation everyone had seen developing in the past two years. The Government’s policy of non-inter-vention was simply the result of unpreparedness to act. Tile time had arrived when Japan should act independently, assuming the leadership in China which was properly hers.— Sun.
