A message from Liverpool (.Nova Scotia) to Ottawa announces the death of Mr. Jason Mack, president of the Legislative Council, who recently refused the request of the Premier to resign.—A. and N.Z.C.A. Mr. C. J. Stevens, J.P.. Registrant of Pensions, Napier, is at present in Gisborne on departmental business. With Mr. J. Jackson, Mr. Stevens presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday inmorning. The popularity of Mr. A. M. Thomson, accountant of the Bank of New Zealand, who has been transferred to Wellington, was shown by the large and representative attendance of business -men who gathered in the Masonic Hotel yesterday to bid farewell. Mr J. B. Kells, convenor of the meeting presided. Speeches regretting the departure of Mr. Thomson ana paying tribute to his general good nature, were delivered by the chairman and Messrs A- C. Cooke. H. De Costa, T. Corson. J. Blair, C. E. Armstrong, F. H. Galvin, J. A. Nicol, G. B. Oman and A. J. Dixon. It was' mentioned during the proceedings that it had been intended to make a presentation of a wallet of notes to Mr. Thomson that day, but several friends from the country had intimated their desire to add their contributions, and under the circumstances it was "decided to hold the gift over for a few days, and forward it to Mr Thomson at Wellington, the hope being expressed that he would purchase for Mrs. Thomson and himself some tangible memento of the many friends he had left behind in Gisborne.
