AVAI'ROA RACES MOUNTAIN TOP WINS CARROLL MEMORIAL WAIROA, Jan. 20. The AVairoa Racing Club’s annual meeting concluded in fine weather and with a large attendance. The track was good. Following are the results: AVaikaremoana Hack Handicap.—s Hinekapua: (T. S. Fanning) 1, 3 io Maunga 2, 1 Night Gambler 3. Won by half a length and three lengths. Time, 1.15. Also started: 2 Tan, 4 Voltore, 6 Gold Watch. High-weight Handicap.—l Garzon (J. Nixon) 1,2 Lombardo 2, 3 Copper Nob 3. Won by a length and half a length. Time, 1.44 2-5. Also ran: 4 Crishna, 5 Gold Streak, 6 Black Flier. Carroll Memorial Stakes.—3 Mountain Top (T. S. Fanning) 1,2 Handy 2, 1 Princss Nata 3. AVon..by half a length and three lengths. Time 1.42. NOTES ON THE RACING (Special to the Times.) WAIROA, Jan. 20. In the Waikaremoana Hack Handicap six horses faced " the starter _\ ight Gambler was the first to show out, hut Yoltore changed places in the back stretch, with the chestnut mare lying close. Nearing the bend at the road Volore had increased his load, but nearing the entrance to the straight Night Gambler came along fast, with Hinekapua closing up the gap. A splendid race up the straight saw Hinekapua. shoot past Yoltore nd win by half a length from Tino Maunga. who was full of running. Night Gambler was three lengths back, the others fading out. The High-weight Handicap saw a good start after Lombardo had first made a false start. Garzon took the lead, but Blackflier was soon out ahead, and at the halfway had four •lengths advantage, with the others strung out. Garzon moved up into second place with Crishna third. At the three furlong post, Nixon using his whip brought the favorite through to the front and went on to win by a length from Lombardo on ds outside, with Copper Nob half a length back. Crishna was badly bumped when putting in her challenge and fell back. Blackflier cracked up in the final quarter. Jn the Carroll Memorial Handicap oniy three horses faced the starter. Princess Nata being a strong favorite. Handy got away smartly, with Mountain Top after him and at the. halfway post had moved two lengths ahead. At the five furlongs Mountain Top fell 1 ■ *',', Handy taking the lead, but a strong challenge in the straight saw Mountain Top out in front again to win by half a length from Handy, with Princess Nata three lengths further away. In the Scurry Handicap the cider at the first furlong was Taukari, flakuwai, and Cluster. A t the time furlongs peg Taukari was still loading, but coming into tht straight Singer Boy showed aimad with King’s Dream in close -attendance. Hakuwai put in a great P nish and out down the leaders, to win by two lengths from King’s Dream, Taukari dropping back. The Paeroa Hack Handicap saw

mo Maunga and Night Song come away first, Rakaroa hieing badiy uJ:. Night Song moved in front near the road, and gained a good lead, hut Tino Maunga came up fast on the outside and cut down the leader in great style, winning by a nose, with Hinekaupua a length further away

u'd After a false start in the Flying Handicap Haurangi led the field with Westerner next. Serenade was badly left and looked hopelessly out of the rce. Westerner changed places with the leader at the three furlongs post, but Haurangi soon regained the lead. Serenade then made a grat run and mowed down the field. All were bunch-, ed at the entrance w the straight, fighting out a splendid finish, We judge being unable to separate Morose and Serenade, with Westerner two lengths away and Haurangi last. In the Electric Hack Handicap the five horses got away well. Waioeka Jack was the first to show out, with Haukuwai and Night Song close behind. The leader held liis position •,n til the straight was reached, where he fell track slightly enabling Carniola to draw level on the outside and go on to win by half a- length, Taur kari being a similar’ distance behind. Six horses faced the barrier in the President’s Handicap. * Handy was quickest away, with Pita and the rest strung out. Gold Dot, the favorite, Heine lat. At the halfway post, the •older was Pita, Gold Dot, and Handy and the other two well back. Entering the straight Haiidy"moved up.inside , hut Pita went ahead again with Gold Dot fighting out the. finish. ■WELLINGTON, Jan. 20. The AVellington Racing Club’s summer carnival opened in good weather, and with a big attendance from all parts of the Dominion. South Island .horses met with success in the big events, Rapier returning a big dividend in the AVellington Cup, and Booster paying over a score in the Telegraph Handicap. Punters were rewarded with good dividends, only two favorites getting home during the day. The totalisator returns showed a slight decrease from the corresponding day of last year, £47,193 being invested as against £48,319 in 1920 The track was in great order.
