A 5 i ATE UR ATHLETICS. GISBORNE CLUB’S EVENING MEETING. - J. DOUGLAS PUTS UP P.B. RECORD. MISS EASTWOOD’S FAST RUN Despite counter attractions there was a large attendance at the Childers Road Reserve last evening, when the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club bold another ot then* popular «vening meetings. -three events were held, necessitating seven contests, and some keen and exciting racing was witnessed. A particularly close finish eventuated in the five mile cycle race between J. Douglas and J. Algic, the former winning by less than a loot. The last hundred yards was indeed thrilling, both men riding practically neck and neck all the way. Alg:.e, however, was disqualified lor cutting through oil the inside without allowing the requisite distance in between the riders and soaond place awarded to Goldsmith. Douglas’ time, 14.6 2-5 seconds, is particularly meritorious, and constituted a record for Poverty Bav. lowering the existing record by 8 2-ssec Douglas has been riding well of late, and'his performance last evening adds still iurther to bis laurels. The girls’ race, as usual, attracted considerable interest, and the final Weis verv dose*} resulting in for Miss' N. Jansson (164yds.), who finished a yard ahead of Miss E. Denton (Svds.), with Miss N. Eastwood (scr.) third, eighteen inches away, and Miss J. Haisman (9yds.) less than six inches back, a tribute to the work of the liandicapper (Mr. A. O. Swan). The time, 11.3-osec, proves that tlie race was fast, and it constitutes Miss Eastwood’s host performance on the track in Gisborne. PROFESSIONAL ATHLETICS THIS EVENING'S MEETING The- undermentioned handicaps have been declared by the official handicapper, Mr C. L. Davy, for the running and cycling events to be held on the Reserve this evening at 5.4 A. Good entries have been received in both events and as all the competitors are still in strict tiaining for the meeting to be held in the near future, good racing should be witnessed this evening. AVATERSIDE AVORKERS SPORTS The Gisborne waterside workers are holding their annual sports meeting on the 26th of this month on the Patutahi Domain and on their programme they have .included two professional cycle races—one mile and two miles." which should draw big fields. This organisation is to be congratulated for putting on these events to further the interests of clean healthy sport.
