MONTHLY MEETING

(Special to the Times.') , TOLAGA BAY, Jkin. IS, The ordinary monthly meeting oi the Uawa County Council wa.s field on January 15. There were present, tho chairman (Councillor E. B. Boland) and Councillors D. H. Hawkins, J. McNeil, G. A. Neill, J. S. Paterson and Q. E. Smith. Leave of absence was granted Crs. E. O. Loisel, and P. T. Weeks. The Department of Labour asked that the statutory half holiday for shops in the district be decided. The Plunket Society asked permission for the use of the 'Council Cham- j hers on every alternative Friday be- I tween the hours of 10 a.m. and 14 noon. Granted. The Department of Agriculture forwarded a certificate of transfer of slaughter house from W. E. and H. E, Hale, to Wm. Hall. The Police Department advised that the conduct of the billiard saloons had boon satisfactory. Messrs Rees, Bright, Wauehop, and Parker gave an opinion on travelling stock and stock routes. Received. The Committee of the Dobson Creek Mine Disaster 'Relief Fund forwarded a subscription list, asking that an appeal to the public be made. It was proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Cr. Neill, -that the subscription list be posted in the public office of the Council Chambers. Messrs Rees, Bright, Wauehop, and Parker enclosed an agreement between Gisborne Sheep farmer’s E. M. and M. Co. and the Council in connection with the installation oi bowser 'stem petrol supply. The poundkeeper reported that 19 head of stock were impounded durum the month. The Health Inspector reported that there were no cases of infectious diseases. . , . ~ ~ Cr. Paterson introduced Mr. McDonald, who sought permission to erect a bridge over the Uawa river. Alter Air. McDonald had addressed the 'Council, it was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Paterson, seconded hv Cr. Smith that the application be ( ranted, subject to the plan and work being approved by the Engineer. It was proposed by Cr. Paterson, seconded by Cr. Neill that the Engineer he authorised to form and culvert Taharangi Bridge road. —Carried.

EXGIXEEIPS ItEPORT. .Main highways maintenance. —Continued wet weather during the month hrou'dit down several small slips throughout length of highway and surfacemen have been engaged catting hack same and opening outlets. 'While engaged on rolling on this section Xo. 1 Roller skidded over side of road owing to the damp condition oi the ground- and capsized into the creek bank in a had position. Alter considerable labour the roller was brought back onto the roadway, having sustained no mechanical damage. Laying of top course metalling on Toiaga Roto-o-tahi -section will he put ?u hand during the coming week the Public Works Department having resumed metalling on Roto-o-tahi Pakarae section during the present week. District Roads.—Roads have all dried out and surfacemen are engaged oil improving surtaces which, genrrnllv, were left in rough condition alter broken weather, formation work on hand on Bartram s Hill has boon considerably delayed by weather conditions and this' section o-ut in a bad state while had weather continued. Contractors are now pushing work on to completion. Metalling on" Tolaga-Arakihi read is in hand and work has been carried out to loot of Par train’s Hill: as soon as a small section of top dressing is completed at this point work will he put in hand from Iviore junction downwards to meet present metalling, formation work is in hand on Delta Road over river cutting. It will he necessary to provide for some improvement to road line on northern end of ’I«harangi Bridge on this road as road line is being fenced and present track in use is off the road reserve. This work requires to he done immediately as this section of road gives access to racecourse. Metalling of Menkhouse Street from Cook street to Resolution street is in hand and will be completed during coming week. Wigan Bridge hands are engaged putting down decking and hand railing and work is progressing towards completion. Good progress is being made by contractor ior erection of clerk's residence and building should be "ready for occupation early in February. Huanui road.—ln a wot season such as experienced this year tins roads presents a serious difficulty in keeping it opened up in condition lor wool carting owing to worn-out condition of formation and lack of efficient adverting. Its present condition is brought about through insufficient maintenance during past years and culvert renewals not havinir been provided as required. If urination and eulverting of this road was carried out twenty-six years ago and all the original adverting is now decayed and outside surface of roadway in many places is worn well lielow the water table level and, consequently, rain-water spreads over and along road bed rendering it impassable in showery weather and not allowing of quick drying out when weather conditions improve. Each year that the road is allowed to remain in il*s present condition will entail an increasingly larger expenditure to eventually put it in order and road in its present condition is not a lit road for lorry haulage which is now the universal method cf v.uol haulage. For economy in future maintenance it is desirable that mem s should he provided for eulverting aul improvement to formation.
