CLARKE ANNEXES' SINGLES
AUCKLAND, Jan. 22. The Dominion bowling tournament concluded at the Carlton green to-day with the playing of the remaining games in the pairs and singles, the results are as follows: — . —Fairs Championship.— Fiuai.—A. Brackebush and- N. Walker (Auckland) 22 v. Bell senr. and Bell jnr. (Hamilton) 12. —Singles Championship.— Semi-finals. —Bell jnr. (Hamilton) 17 v. Smellie (Green Island, Dunedin) 16; H. Clarke (Rocky Nook, Auckland) 17 v. V. Mclntyre (Hamilton) 16.
Final;—Clarke 24 v. Bell 11. Walker, who won the singles chainpionship in 1915, 1919 and 1923, added the honor of skipping the champion pair, after a good uphill fight in the early stages against Bell, who had his son as lead. Bell won the first two heads, getting three_ on each, and led seven to nothing after the third head. Walker opened the account with a single on the iourth, adding another on the fifth and sixth. Walker burned the head twice on the seventh, and scored three, reducing Bell’s lead to 7to 6. A single to each followed, Bell adding two on the tenth, when the board read Hamilton 10, Auckland 7. Bell scored one on the eleventh, but Walker took the next three heads with one, two and one, making the score 11 all at the end of the fourteenth head. The next head was keenly contested. Brackebnsh pushed out Bell jnr.’s shot- bowl and added a counter and lay two. However, Bell senr. drew the shot. Walker then disturbed the head, to lie two. Bell touched one of Walker’s woods near kitty, but on a measure Walker scored two, and took the lead for the first time by 13 to 11. Thereafter Walker was never headed. He won two successive heads with three and one. Bell scored one on the eighteenth head, his first poiiit since the eleventh head. When Bell lay one on the nineteenth head, Walker cut out the shot bowl to lie three at position. He' maintained the lead 20 to 12. Splendid drawing was witnessed on tlie twentieth head. Auckland was one up when the skips changed ends. Walker added another and the failure of Bell senr. to drive out Walker’s howls gave Auckland the pair championship by 22 to 12. The final of the singles between Clarke and Bell was- disappointing. The hitter, who had .figured prominently in all three events, had evidently felt the strain, and lacked the experience of Clarke. The latter led 8 to 5 at the ninth head, and added six more befoVe Bell took the thirteenth with a single. Clarke scored four on the sixteenth, and Bell three on the seventeenth. A two on eacli of the two following heads gave Clarke an unchallengeable lead, and Bell retired. Clarice winning by 24 to 11.— P.A
