The commencement of the Australian tennis championship tournament was made the occasion oi the opening of the Victorian Tennis Association’s splendid new ground at Ivooyong in fine weather. CANTERB URY CHAMPIONSHIPS. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. The Canterbury tennis championship tournament concluded to-day in hot weather. Following are the results : _ Hus —Men’s Singles.— Fourth Round.—C. Brewster (N.S.W.) beat A. L. North (N.S.W.) 6—2, 6— 5: G. Oilivier heat D. F. Glanville 5—7, 6—o, 7-—5. Semi-final.—N. Reach (N.SAN ) beat C. Brewster (N.S.W.' B—6,8 —6, 6 —2, G. Olliver beat 1. A. Seay 6—2, 6—2. Final.—G. Oilivier (Canterbury! beat N. Peach (N.S.W.) 6—4, 6—o, 6—3. It was a close game in the first set, although Olliver might have won by a bigger margin. In the second set lie was unplayable and in the third he was always comfortable, returning everything that Peach sent down, and displaying far greater court cralt. Throughout the match he always had a little bit in reserve to finish off ;>. rallv in his favor.
